OETA has announced its annual PBSKIDS Writers Contest, designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through hands-on, active learning. The contest, made possible in part by local financial support from the Oklahoma State Department of Education empowers children in kindergarten through third grade to celebrate creativity and build literacy skills by writing and illustrating their very own stories.
“OETA is committed to helping Oklahoma children build valuable literacy skills through fun, hands-on opportunities to express their creativity and explore their imagination," said Curtis Calvin, OETA vice president of education. “Through providing opportunities for Oklahoma kids to learn and explore through creative writing, OETA is making a commitment to its children and their long term success, in school and in life.”
Beginning February 20, 2017, children in Oklahoma can submit their entries to the OETA PBS KIDS Writers Contest. OETA will select local winners and award prizes including a trophy and prize packaged valued up to $500.00 in the spring of 2017 at the Oklahoma State Capitol.
The contest is supported by a robust set of resources for children, parents and teachers. Story ideas, activity sheets, along with the previous winning entries are available to inspire children during the brainstorming process. PBS LearningMedia also offerings a collection of online teacher resources for use in classrooms nationwide.
