The mysterious gunslinger Shane (Alan Ladd) rides into a small town with hopes of settling down as a farmhand. After taking a job on Joe Starrett's (Van Heflin) farm, Shane is drawn into a battle between the people of the town and cattle baron Rufus Ryker (Emile Meyer). Shane's fondness for Startett's son, Joey (Brandon de Wilde), forces Shane to realize that he must thwart Ryker's plan.

Famous theater actress Anna Kalman (Ingrid Bergman) is living the single life, believing she has missed her chance at meeting a husband. Weary of socializing in Europe, she returns to her London flat, where her sister Margaret (Phyllis Calvert) and diplomat brother-in-law Alfred (Cecil Parker) invite her to a banquet. She hesitates until Alfred's banker friend, Philip Adams (Cary Grant), arrives and a flirtation begins.
