During World War II, commanding officer "Rich" Richardson (Clark Gable) is placed in charge of the USS Nerka. The crew on board the Nerka -- led by Lieutenant Jim Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster), who had been passed over for promotion when Richardson was brought in is openly hostile to their new commander, especially when it becomes clear that Richardson's sole obsession is finding and destroying the ship that sank his old vessel.

A student in high school, David Lightman (Matthew Broderick), unintentionally hacks into a government supercomputer while searching for new video games. After starting what he believes to be a game of Global Thermonuclear War, Lightman causes the supercomputer to activate the nation's nuclear weapons in response to his simulated threat. After Lightman comes to his senses, with help from his girlfriend (Ally Sheedy), they must find a way to alert the authorities to stop the onset of World War III.

In 1970s Philadelphia, Jim Ellis (Terrence Howard), who is driven by a love of competitive swimming, saves an abandoned pool building with the help of a janitor named Elston (Bernie Mac). When city officials mark the place for demolition, he fights back by founding an all-black swim team. Facing racism, violence, and a hostile city official, Jim struggles to prepare his novice swimmers for the state championships.

To get the party underway, the manager (Paul Lynde) of pop singer Sugar Kane (Linda Evans) decides a skydiving publicity stunt will really do the trick. As Frankie and the others are pulled into the plan, things get out of control. Throw in Bonehead (Jody McCrea) falling in love with a mermaid (Marta Kristen) and a kidnapping biker (Harvey Lembeck), and the party's just getting started.

She moves to Vermont and embarks on a series of life-changing events.
