OETA Movie Club June 2023

Saturday, June 17th at 9pm
Commanding officer General Broulard (Adolphe Menjou) orders General Mireau (George Macready), to attack a German trench position during World War I. Though the mission is completely reckless, Mireau commands his own subordinate, Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas), to plan the attack. When it ends up being a disaster, General Mireau demands the court-martial of three random soldiers in order to avoid humiliation.

Tennessee teacher Bertram Cates (Dick York) is sent to trial for violating the Butler Act, a state law prohibiting public school teachers from teaching evolution instead of creationism in the 1920s. This drew national attention from the media with writer E. K. Hornbeck (Gene Kelly) reporting, two of the most well-known lawyers go head to head: Matthew Harrison Brady (Fredric March) for the prosecution, and Henry Drummond (Spencer Tracy) for the defense.

While traveling handyman Homer Smith (Sidney Poitier) stops by a rural farm in Arizona. There, he is greeted by a group of Roman Catholic nuns who emigrated from Germany. After realizing that the rural farm needs work done, Homer takes on various repair projects for the nuns. Impressed by Homer's kindness, the nuns begin to believe that he has been sent by God.
